Departing from the pier in Montego Bay, you will drive towards Reading and up “Long Hill”. You will pass through rural villages such as Anchovy, Montpelier, Ramble, Haddo and Whithorn. You will have a great view of one of the lush breath-taking George’s Plain, which is a large expanse of flatlands that can be seen for many miles. Continuing downhill and through Deans Valley onto the South Coast; at the border of the parishes of Westmoreland and St. Elizabeth, local fishermen and women prepares and sells their catch of the day, along with a popular Jamaican staple called Bammy, which is made from cassava.
Continuing through Bamboo Avenue, a rather splendid sight…the tour goes on to Middle Quarters which is known as “Shrimp Country” in the parish of St. Elizabeth. The scenic tour continues to Maggoty, home to one of Jamaica’s Hydro Dams, which generates electricity to a wide section of the parish, before arriving at Appleton Estate.
At the Estate, you will see the extraction of cane juice as it was done in the 18th century, by the resident donkey; tour the Distillery and the Ageing House and you will also have the opportunity to taste the product. There is also a rum mixing session for those who wish to try their own special blend…Appleton Light, Medium and Dark. There is a video presentation of the actual blending and mixing, which is done in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica and a complimentary bottle of Appleton Rum for every visitor! On the return drive to Montego Bay, lunch is served at a local restaurant.
