You will travel west to the Central Mountain Region of the island, an hour and a half from the San Juan Metropolitan area. The first stop will be the renowned Arecibo Radio Telescope, the world's largest and most sensitive radio telescope. Operated by Cornell University, the radio telescope has been featured in movies such as Golden Eye and Contact, when it is not fulfilling its daily task of data collection and analysis. The visitor center exhibits impressive interplanetary displays and provides the visitor with an in-depth explanation of the work currently conducted by the scientists.
After the visit to the Observatory visitor center, you will drive to Río Abajo Forest and the Lago Dos Bocas. The lake was created in 1942 when a dam was constructed by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority for a hydroelectric power plant. It also serves as one of the island's potable water reservoirs. You will board one of the local ferrys for a scenic ride through this spectacular mountain region. A stop will be made at one
of the four lakeside restaurants for you to enjoy great Puerto Rican cuisine during lunch on your own, or to admire the beauty of the area. After lunch, you will return to San Juan.
