1:00 PM - You will meet your professionally trained, English speaking guide in your hotel lobby and be lead to your Private 24 seat Deluxe Motor coach. Drive through the city walls to your drop off point for the Trevi Fountain area. Start from here your guided walking tour through the most beautiful Square and Fountains of Rome. Walk through the narrow twisting streets to the Trevi Fountain. Located in the Trevi region of Rome, the fountain stands 85 feet high, 65 feet wide, and is the largest Baroque fountain in the city. The fountain, at the junction of three roads (tre vie,) marks the terminal point of the Aqua Virgo, one of the ancient aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome. It was the custom to build a fountain at the end. The current fountain has design elements reaching back to 1629, but was not actually constructed until 1762A traditional legend holds that if visitors throw a coin with one's right hand over one's left shoulder into the Trevi Fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome.
Then walk through the twisting narrow streets to the Spanish Steps. The steps ascend a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square) at the base, and the Piazza Trinità dei Monti and its dominating church of Trinità dei Monti at the top. It is the longest and widest staircase in all Europe. The stairway of 138 steps was built in 1723–1725, linking the Bourbon Spanish Embassy at the bottom to the Holy See at the top. In the Piazza at the base is the Early Baroque fountain Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Old Boat), built in 1627-1629 and often credited to Pietro Bernini, father of the more famous artist.
Next, visit the Piazza della Rotonda, a rectangular square with a central fountain and obelisk. The draw to this square has to be the more than 1800-year-old building sitting beside it, the Pantheon. The building's dome, more than 142 feet high was the largest dome in the world until 1436 when the Florence Cathedral was constructed. At the top of the dome is a large opening, the oculus, which was the only source of light. The interior diameter equals the interior height of 142 feet. Your guide will explain the building from the outside and then you will have the opportunity to go inside on your own. Inside you will see the tomb of Raphael as well as several Italian kings.
From here, it is a short walk to one of the most famous and arguably the most beautiful of Rome's many squares, Piazza Navona. The large and lively square, built on the former Domitian's stadium, hence the long, oval shape of the square, features no less than three magnificent fountains. The central and largest fountain is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (fountain of the four rivers). It was constructed between 1647 and 1651, sculpted by Bernini representing the four great rivers of the world. From the piazza, it is a short walk to your transportation for the drive back to your hotel.
