A tour of the Antrim Valley Sculpture Studio and Gardens offers a rare insight into the work of sculptor, water-colorist and book illustrator, Roger Burnett. Roger Burnett first sailed from England aboard a thirty-foot ketch in 1974. In the years that followed the islands became his adopted home. His paintings and books capture the very essence of life as it is lived in the Caribbean and his work as a sculptor has won considerable international acclaim. The visit begins in the studio with an introduction to the age-old working methods of the portrait and figurative sculptor, from the clay model to the bronze cast. Roger Burnett is renowned for his ability to open up the creative process and infuse others. Currently work is in progress on a series of sensuous life-size figures titled “Daughter’s of the Caribbean Sun”. Two and a half acres of tranquil tropical gardens surround the studio and border the River Antrim. The gardens are the creation of Roger’s Grenadian born wife, Denise. In this lush valley almost every species of tropical flora can be found. The sculptural theme continues along the secluded paths that lead through the gardens. For the more adventurous guests, a trail leads to the site of an 18th century water mill. The studio visit and tour of the gardens takes approximately one and a half hours and the venue has a particular appeal to those interested in the visual arts and tropical gardens. Originals, prints, books and other related gift items can be purchased from the gallery. In order to preserve the intimacy and ambience of the studio and gardens visitor numbers are limited. Refreshments will be served after the tour and you will then proceed to your awaiting ship.
