During the Viking Age, (8th to 11th century A.D.) Birka, which is on the island of Björk (Birch Island) was an important trading center which handled goods from Scandinavia as well as Central and Eastern Europe and the Orient. The archaeological site of Birka gives some insight to the elaborate trading networks the Vikings setup across Europe and their influence on the subsequent history of Scandinavia.
Birka was founded around 750 A.D. when Malaren was not a lake but part of the sea. The village remained important until around 950 A.D. when nearby Sigtuna became more powerful.
During the cruise to Birka, your onboard guide will give you more information on the archipelago and it's history. Upon arrival in Birka, you will have a guided tour of the museum. The museum, although not huge, is a great place to learn more about the Viking period through ancient findings from the excavations, models and replicas as well as a film that is showed regularly.
After your visit to the museum, you will have free time to explore on your own. Birka is a beautiful island with plenty of opportunities for walks in the countryside and a landscape rich in cultural history. Experience the magical atmosphere at Hemlanden, the Nordic region's biggest Viking-period cemetery. Visit houses and workshops that were recently constructed using the same techniques and tools as the Vikings once used. Visit the Ansgar chapel, or bring along your suit and towel as Birka has a nice beach for sunning along the shore of Lake Mälaren. The Särimner restaurant has a menu featuring elements of Viking cuisine.
During your return to Stockholm, enjoy the ever changing scenery, grab a snack from the onboard cafeteria or just take in the fresh air.
Please note: This tour leaves from a location in the center of Stockholm, not the cruise pier. Transfers are not included in the tour price.
