Situated in rolling farmland just 15 miles south-east of Edinburgh is Glenkinchie Distillery. The home of “The Edinburgh Malt” was founded in 1833. Here you will learn about the process of making Scotland’s finest export. Your guided tour is followed by a `wee dram’ of Glenkinchie followed by a second dram from a choice of others for comparison (e.g. a Highland whisky).
Return to Leith, which has been an important port for centuries, serving the Baltic and low land countries to the East, while Glasgow looked towards the New World. A port which was a massive importer of wine (in particular claret) and exporter of whisky made it a thriving centre of trade.
Arrive at the private members’ rooms of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society which occupies one of the oldest buildings in Leith and was once home to the liquor vaults. This impressive building has dark wood panelled walls, open fire-places and stunning old paintings of wild Scottish Highland scenes – the atmosphere is everything you would hope for! Enjoy a delicious two-course lunch, cooked on the premises using the finest ingredients.
Afterwards learn about the history of the society, whose selected whiskies are single malt, bottled from a single cask at full cask strength – they are the finest whiskies and will provide a truly Scottish gourmet experience for your visit to the capital city. Settle in an informative and fully tutored whisky tasting to include 3 whiskies at cask strength in these glorious surroundings to truly celebrate Leith’s associations with liquor.
