Journey via motor coach to the spectacular icewall of the Mendenhall Glacier and its adjacent Visitors Center approximately 20 minutes from downtown. Here you will have approximately 45 minutes to roam the grounds, take in the interactive exhibits, and turn to a ranger who can satisfy your curiosity about the natural wonders of the Mendenhall.
Then, you’re on your way to a whale watch! Board your vessel in Auke Bay Harbor and set out on a search for humpback whales, Orcas, porpoises, sea lions, eagles and other wildlife. In the comfortable heated cabin, surrounded by huge view windows, a naturalist will explain wildlife behavior and point out the sights. Or grab a pair of complimentary binoculars and venture on deck for a closer view and amazing photo opportunities. Your captain knows these waters, and where to find whales – a sighting’s guaranteed or you receive a $100 refund ($50 for a child)! Time on the boat is approximately 2 hours.
Top off your adventure at the world-famous Gold Creek Salmon Bake. Arrive to the aroma of wild salmon grilling over an open alder wood fire, in a beautiful setting nestled in the rain forest. The all-you-can-eat buffet also includes Cheechako chicken, pasta primavera, Chilkoot baked beans, Tongass wild-rice pilaf, and other sides, salads and beverages. Beer and wine are available for purchase. Leave room for blueberry cake for dessert!
After your meal, roast marshmallows over a crackling campfire, and stroll to the beautiful Salmon Creek waterfall. Take your time! Most guests stay at the salmon bake for approximately 90 minutes, but with frequent courtesy bus service back to downtown, you can return at your leisure.
