Depart London and drive towards Dover, approximately two hours away on the coast. You will visit Dover Castle, with structures dating back to the Roman times, which sits overlooking the town of Dover. A strong hold was established here by William the Conqueror around 1066 AD. It was during the rein of King Henry II when the castle began to take shape. The castle survived through the English Civil War (1642) unscathed and saw action during the Napoleonic Wars when it was fortified and a complex of tunnels were dug underneath. At the height of the war, the tunnels housed more than 2000 men. More than 100 years later, the tunnels were used as an shelter and then later a hospital when war broke out in 1939. A year later the evacuation of Dunkirk was directed from a headquarters in the caves. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to have a viewing of the tunnels.
Next, visit the ancient city of Canterbury, which has been a center of Christian worship for almost 1,700 years. Time will be taken for those wishing lunch. After lunch, enjoy a walking tour of this charming village, with views of the cathedral, infamous as the setting for the brutal murder of Thomas Beckett in 1170. Canterbury became the center of one of the most important medieval pilgrimages in Europe, immortalized by Geoffrey Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales.
Then drive to the charming town of Greenwich, packed with exquisite parks, gardens, and architecture. The town has a long connection with the sea, science, sovereigns and time. You will have time to take a look at the Cutty Sark, the fastest sailing ship of its time.
As the early evening approaches you will board a river boat and gently cruise back to the center of London. You will pass by historic sights such as the Tower of London, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, before arriving at Westminster pier where your tour ends.
Please note: Water is included with lunch. Additional drinks are at guests expense.
Tour departs from the Victoria Coach (bus) Station. The coach station is an approximate 5 minute walk from the Victoria Train station.
