Upon arrival at the tour meeting point, you will be outfitted with top-of-the-line rain gear, hat, gloves, socks, boots and safety glasses. You will also have a short safety briefing before heading out. Be sure to keep your camera handy, as this seafaring adventure offers photo opportunities from the moment you set sail.
Throughout this nearly 25-mile coastal expedition, your guide will offer narrative covering the area's history, geology, culture and ecology.
You will board your four-passenger, 14 foot zodiac boat and head off the map to behold the beauty of Alaska, away from the crowds. Following the guide boat, you will motor to the harbor in front of Saxman Native Village and chat about the totem poles and Tlingit culture. You'll search for bears, eagles, whales and seals, and venture into the back country wilds of Nichols Passage. Here, you will marvel at the beautifully rugged coastline of southeast Alaska , most specifically the intended site of the "Bridge to Nowhere". This Ketchikan day tour takes place in Alaskan coastal waters, not on calm lakes. Chances are it will be bumpy.
You'll navigate through the coves and inlets around Blank Island, view the tranquil cove of an old gold mine and visit a seal rookery. Before you return to the dock you'll make a brief stop in front of historic Creek Street to hear about its wild history.
Once back in town, you'll dock your boat and warm up with a hot beverage. You will then have the option to be dropped off at your ship, or you can enjoy a brief stroll back to your cruise ship.

We were the only ones out on this adventure. It was a bit lonely out in the open waters but our guide was wonderful and sweet. Our daughter was able to "feed" an eagle by throwing a frozen fish into the water. We saw the eagle swoop down and grab it. Given we were the only participants on the excursion, I wish we could have had more fish, and fun opportunities like that!
The tour was well run, equipment kept us warm and dry, and the boats were in top condition. Our guide gave us a bonus of having some frozen fish that he threw out into a couple of select inlet stops. I was able to video bald eagles swooping down to get the fish. Lifetime opportunity!

The Zodiac boats in Ketchikan were awesome. The guide (Adam) was knowledgeable, personable and seemed to really enjoy his work. It was the most fun we had during the entire week. Would return in a heart beat BTW Shore Excursions is very professional and an excellent provider of excursions. The Zodiac adventure was not available through the cruise line.
