Highlights of the Bay of Islands

Take in the highlights of Kerikeri as you visit historic sites such as Hararu Falls, the Stone Store, and the Kemp House.

Your adventure begins at Waitangi Wharf, where you will meet your expert tour guide. Set off toward the area's main attractions as the guide shares details of the area's rich history, stories, and secrets along the way. Listen to the thundering water at Hararu Falls, a rare horseshoe-shaped waterfall fed by the Waitangi River that rushes into the Bay of Islands.

From there, enjoy a scenic drive through the popular town of Kerikeri. This charming area boasts locally-farmed restaurants, various art galleries, and boutique shops. After passing the Kerikeri River Basin, you will visit Te Waimate Mission Station, which is New Zealand's second-oldest building. Te Waimate Mission Station serves as a representation of New Zealand's farming and architectural history. You'll be able to hear stories of important early encounters between the Maori and Europeans. Te Waimate Mission was built by the local Maori and is a single-story building, Gregorian in design.

Established in 1819, the Mission Station is one of the first places in New Zealand where the Maori invited visitors to live among them. Built under the protection of local chiefs who were keen to harness the trade and technology of Europe, Kerikeri Mission Station grew amidst a backdrop of tribal warfare and ever-increasing visits from foreign ships. While here, you will also be treated to some morning snacks and refreshments in the form of scones and tea or coffee.

After exploring the Mission Station, you will be taken to the Stone Store and Kemp House, which is a missionary home built in 1822. Step back in time as you step inside the adjacent Stone Store, built in 1835 as a storehouse for the mission and trading post for the Church Missionary Society (CMS). Stop and sample delicious treats at Makana Chocolates before heading back to the ship.
