Biking in Bari

Ride into history when you bike through Bari and see the main attractions of this capital of the Italian region of Puglia. Bari's historic nucleus is on a headland reaching into the Adriatic Sea.

Between the heart of the Old Town and the sea is Bari's most famous church, the eleventh-century Romanesque Basilica of Saint Nicholas with its precious crypt.

Continue to Bari's other great church, the Cattedrale di San Sabino, Cathedral of Saint Sabinus. This, and not the Basilica di San Nicola, is Bari's cathedral. It is another massive building in the Romanesque style, dating to the late 12th century.

Only a short distance away is Bari's castle, the Castello Svevo "Swabian Castle", an imposing fortress by the sea.

The local people live their lives almost communally, with doors open, women making pasta in the doorways and lots of comings and goings.

See the modern French part of the city and view the beautifully restored Petruzzelli Theatre, which is one of the most important opera houses in Italy after La Scala in Milan and the San Carlo Theatre in Naples. See luxurious boutiques and the famous fish market next to the sea. Have a taste of local gelato to finish off your day.
