Private Copenhagen City Overview

You will start your private Copenhagen overview highlights tour with a visit to the world-famous statue of the Little Mermaid, the creation of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen around 1837. The statue shows her sitting on a rock overlooking the sea and contemplating the loss of her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and the love of a human prince.

From here continue past the 17th century citadel of Kastellet and the yellow naval barracks of Nyboder. Passing the National Gallery in a grand Italian Renaissance building, you will see the lovely fairy-tale castle of Rosenborg, a former residence castle, which today houses a museum of Danish royal history and an underground vault protecting the Danish crown jewels.

Continuing on, your drive will take you past the neoclassical Church of Our Lady Cathedral, located next to the Copenhagen University, founded in 1479. Pass City Hall Square with the grand City Hall. From here the mile-long pedestrian street Stroeget bisects the old city, and along this lively thoroughfare you will find lots of shops, cafes and street entertainment.

On the opposite side you will see the world-famous Tivoli Garden which dates from 1843 - one of the oldest amusement parks in the word. Pass the elegant Glyptoteque Art Museum, home of the vast art collection of the founding family of the Carlsberg Breweries.

You will then enter one of the oldest parts of the city, passing the neo-baroque Christiansborg Palace, which dates from the early 20th century - home of the Danish Parliament and the Queen's reception rooms. You will see the old Stock Exchange building with its remarkable spire of four intertwined dragons - tails and the Holmen Naval Church where the Danish queen was baptized and later married.

Next, you will pass the elegant King's New Square which was built in 1670 - it is flanked by noblemen's palaces, the 1874 Royal Theater and the historic 5-star Hotel D'Angleterre. Nearby is the colorful canal area of Nyhavn - one of the most charming parts of Copenhagen, with brightly colored town houses, cobblestoned streets and wooden sailing ships berthed in the canal.

Finally, you will pay a visit to Amalienborg Palace Square to see the royal winter residence; a grand octagonal courtyard with an equestrian statue of King Frederik V at the center, surrounded by four identical Rococo mansions. One mansion is used as the residence of HM Queen Margrethe II; the second is the new residence of Crown Prince Frederik and his family, the third mansion houses a museum and the fourth is used for visiting royals. This tour is a must for every visitor to Copenhagen. After this scenic overview of the Danish capital, your tour ends back at the pier.
