Highlights of the South Side
Spend your day on this illuminating historical and ecological tour canvassing the South Side of Bonaire.
Bonaire's salt industry hit its peak in the 1850s thanks to the Dutch West India Company and vast slave labor. Journey to the salt flats and see the slave huts built to house the workers. These tiny huts held up to 6 people with a center height equivalent to a man's waist, further adding to the misery of slave life. Gaze up at the salt obelisks, painted in the colors of the Dutch flag, that guide incoming ships for loading. See the salt pyramids lining Bonaire's modern-day salt operations and, time permitting, stop at the Salt Pier for a quick dip and snorkel with the various marine life.
Head out to Pekelmeer and watch the graceful, coral colored flamingos as they walk around. This sanctuary of 10,000 flamingos is 1 of only 4 places in the world where these gorgeous birds breed. Dip your toes in the sand at Sorobon Beach while you watch the windsurfers skirt the water, then head to Lac Cai on the other side of Lac Bay and be greeted by huge piles of empty conch shells.
This 3.5 hour tour includes snacks such as fresh fruits, cheeses and sausage as well as water, juices, soft drinks, wine and beer. Book now for an up close and personal look at Bonaire's past and present with this unforgettable tour of the salt mines, Sorobon Beach and Lac Bay.
