Hiking Mt. Riley

A strenuous hike through mostly temperate rain forest rewards you with a gorgeous summit and several viewpoints throughout the hike. You'll walk through old-growth coastal forest, sub-alpine stunted trees, and boggy alpine muskegs, all while surrounded by glacially-striated rocks.

At the start of your tour you will be greeted by your professional and knowledgeable hiking guide at the pier area where you will sign your waiver and can ask any questions about your day of hiking.

After a narrated drive through the historic Fort Seward, continue for approximately 15-minutes along the Haines Peninsula to the trailhead for Mt. Riley. Along the way your guide will tell you about the history and geography of Haines, it is a beautiful drive with many photo opportunities.

Once at the trailhead, the hike begins over rolling terrain through temperate rainforest. After about one quarter of a mile, you start to gain elevation as you make your way up switchbacks through the forest. There is a lot of long traversing and switchbacks along the trail which helps make the elevation gain more manageable. You are in the trees for the most part and the trail is easy to follow all the way to the top. Throughout the hike, your naturalist guide will educate you about the flora and fauna of the region. At the top of Mt. Riley, the fjord blossoms open with a fantastic 360-degree view. The summit is a granite outcrop from which you can see the snowcapped Chilkat Mountains rise over six thousand feet to the west. The Coast Range and the mountains to the north toward Canada complete this incredible view of rivers, oceans, mountains, and glaciers.

Stop along the way for a picnic lunch at a picturesque setting. After lunch your guide may elect to hike down the opposite side of the mountain towards the east side of the peninsula and descend towards Battery Point.

After a stop at the view point of the beautiful beach of Kelgaya and Battery Point, the last mile leads to the Battery Point trailhead where your return transportation will be waiting for the return to the pier.

Please Note: Children must be a minimum of 8 years old to participate. Guests should be in good physical condition to hike.
