Jewish Cultural Walking Tour of Boston

This walking tour offers an in-depth look at the original Jewish community of one of our nation's oldest cities. With a local expert guide, walk through Beacon Hill to see the famous Vilna Shul. Get a taste of immigrant life at the West End House, and see how those whose lives ended in the Holocaust are remembered at Boston's Holocaust memorial. This Boston walking tour is an excellent way to learn about the history of the Jewish people who first called this city home.

Arrive early and enjoy a snack at The Milk Street cafe, where vegetarian and kosher food is available, before beginning your Jewish cultural tour of Boston. Continue on to Beacon Hill's "back side," where some of the first Jews to immigrate to Boston settled. You can still see some of those typical Jewish homes today. Visit the Beacon Hill neighborhood and see Vilna Shul, Boston's last remaining immigrant era synagogue.

See the West End House, a settlement house, where West End Jews were provided social services when they arrived in Boston. Walk past the Puffer House Cigar-Rolling Factory, where you can catch a glimpse of how early immigrants made a living in Boston. You will stroll past the Famine Memorial and the home of the Jewish Advocate, which is the main Jewish newspaper for the Boston area. This will lead you to one of the most somber sites in Boston, The Boston Holocaust Memorial.

The Boston Holocaust Memorial consists of six glass towers that rise along the granite path near the Freedom Trail. It was completed in 1995 in memory of the six million Jewish men, women, and children who perished during the Holocaust.

This Boston walking tour will wrap up at the entrance of Boston's North End, which was a Jewish community before the arrival of the Italian immigrants around the turn of the century. Put on your walking shoes and take this Jewish cultural tour through the streets of Boston today.
