Private Taormina and Mount Etna

After meeting your professionally-trained guide, set out on the one hour drive to Taormina. Perched on the side of a hill overlooking the sea, the town has a delightful character. Upon arrival, your walking tour will begin with a brief exterior visit to the famous 15th-century Palazzo Corvaia. This building, indicative of the architectural style of the period, is adorned with classic double windows.

Next, visit the impressive Greek Theater, known for its stunning location. This Roman-style theater was reconstructed in the 2nd century AD. It has marvelous acoustics that allows performances of classical plays to still be held in the theater. You will then have free time to grab a quick lunch or explore the many shops that line Corso Umberto, Taormina's main street.

You will then visit Mount Etna. With slopes that soar more than 10,813 feet above sea level, Mount Etna is Europe's largest active volcano. You will travel along a scenic road that winds around the slopes of the mountain. Along the way, you will pass by the town of Giarre, the villages of Santa Venerina and Zafferana, and orchards, vineyards, and woods. You will ride across the remnants of past eruptions, and see the streams of solidified lava cascading down from the top of the mountain. You will visit the Silvestri Crater which is located 6,500 feet above sea level, where you will be able to see the flanks of the mountain which are covered with volcanic cones and craters. The views out across the Catania Gulf can be breathtaking.

You will then rejoin your transportation for the two-hour drive back to Messina.
