Explore Pompeii City with a Drive Along Amalfi Coast

Embarking on your Naples excursion from the Maritime Station with your local representative, you'll journey past Mount Vesuvius as you commence the drive en route to Amalfi.

Nestled at the entrance of a deep gorge, the charming coastal town of Amalfi is a picturesque seaside resort and a highly sought-after holiday destination in Italy. With a rich history as a prominent maritime power during the Middle Ages, Amalfi was a pivotal member of the four Maritime Republics, alongside Venice, Genoa, and Pisa. During your visit, you'll have leisure time to capture photographs and wander along the narrow streets leading to the Piazza del Duomo. Ascend a staircase of more than 60 steps from this square to reach the remarkable Cathedral of St. Andrew. The church's interior, dating back to the 13th century, boasts a notable highlight-the 11th century bronze doors sourced from Constantinople.

Your journey will then guide you to Pompeii, a site ironically preserved by one of the ancient world's most catastrophic events. Here, you'll step back in time to experience daily life as it unfolded in 79 AD. Once a flourishing empire, Pompeii faced devastation when Mount Vesuvius erupted, blanketing the city with 30 feet of volcanic ash and pumice stone. Passing through one of the ancient gates of Pompeii, a brief walk leads you to the heart of the city-the Forum. Surrounded by opulent temples and porticoes, you'll gain insights into the lifestyle of its residents. Marvel at the mansions and artistic creations of affluent patricians who sought refuge in Pompeii to escape the upheavals in Rome. Observe numerous paintings and inscriptions, and navigate the streets with raised pavements on both sides, complete with stepping-stones that facilitated safe crossings at intersections. Following your exploration of Pompeii, the excursion will conclude with a drive back to Naples.

Please Note: Due to the crowds at Pompeii and on the Amalfi Drive, the itinerary may be altered. All sites mentioned will be visited. Lunch NOT included.
