Private Old Citadel of Hue Tour

This Hue tour is a must-do for history buffs and those who enjoy architecture.

Your private, guided tour starts with a peaceful boat ride up the Perfume River, aptly named from the aromatic orchard flowers that fall into the river every autumn. Stop and take photos of the stunning, seven-story Thien Mu Pagoda; built-in 1601, this religious building is the tallest in Vietnam and is the unofficial symbol of the former Imperial capital. Inside this pagoda is the Austin car that carried Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc on his way to his self-immolation in 1963.

From there you will visit the Imperial Citadel. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Citadel is a system of three-walled circles that enclose the Imperial City. Hidden inside the Imperial City is the Forbidden Purple City, reserved exclusively for the Emperor and his family. The perimeter of the Citadel is guarded by a moat, as is the Emperor's Palace. Any unauthorized person who managed to slip through the elaborate wall gates, cross the moats, and enter the Forbidden Purple City was put to death.

Stop for a traditional Hue lunch at a beautiful garden house then view the Royal Tomb of Emperor Tu Duc. Divided into a temple area and a tomb area, the tomb complex was completed before Tu Duc's death and used by him as a residence in his final years. Tu Duc's remains are not encased there, however, but are in a secret location known only to the 200 laborers who were beheaded after their return from burying the king.

If time permits, head over to the Dong Ba market to test your bargaining skills and chat with the locals before your return back to Chan May port.

Don't miss out! Sign up now for an incredible day steeped in the history and beauty of Hue and the ancient Nguyen Dynasty.
