Panama has some of the most accessible rainforests in the world and are what have been called the Jewels of the Earth and Lungs of the Planet, given the dense vegetation that is present in them.
The Panama Canal, just 30 minutes away from Panama City, requires a vast rainforest watershed to feed water to its lock system which uses millions of gallons each day. For this reason, the Canal Zone has to preserve its watershed, making for plentiful pristine rainforests.
The protection of these natural resources is important in Panama as 30% of the country has been set aside for rainforest conservation purposes. Tucked deep in the mystical Soberania National Park at the meeting place of the Chagres River and the Panama Canal, Gamboa Rainforest Resort is an exceptional destination in the middle of 55,000 acres offering the best way of experiencing the unspoiled beauty of the Panamanian rainforest.
After your time at the resort you will then make your way to Miraflores Visitor Centre, a center whose exhibitions focus on the famous Panama Canal. There are four exhibition halls that cover just about every aspect of the Panama Canal including its construction and its operation. During your visit, you can watch vessels cruise the waters and witness the lock gates open and close. There is also a 3D movie played on-site that highlights notable events through the Panama Canal's history.
