Taste of Hoonah
Taste of Hoonah
This 2-hour tour is a perfect introduction to the small, close-knit village of Hoonah located on Chichagof Island, the 5th largest in the United States.
This unique tour starts with a short but scenic ride to the largest Tlingit settlement in Alaska. Hoonah is many things in a small package: a lively fishing village, an old logging town and a beautiful place to visit. Your friendly guide will take you on an excursion through this fishing village, stopping along the way for photo opportunities while giving you information about living in Alaska and living off the land. Learn how the early Tlingit Indians migrated from the shores of Glacier Bay and how the entire village of Hoonah burned down in 1944.
Discover how the village almost doubles in size over the summer months as a myriad of fishers, boaters, hunters and hikers flock to the area to take advantage of the abundant wildlife and gorgeous nature settings.
On your next stop, you will visit Icy Strait Brewing, which is one of South East Alaskas' hidden treasures! Using crisp fresh water from the lkocal mountain streams of Chichagof Island, this brewing company crafts several types of beer on site. For guests who are guests who are 21 and older, you will get a token which can be exchanged for a flight of 3 beers (a light, a medium and a dark beer), and you can sample some fresh popcorn seasoned with a locally sourced Kelp Blend seasoning.
Conclude your tour at the Hoonah Beach House, where you can enjoy a delicious Alaskan seafood entree with lemonade and a side. You'll have the opportunity to try either a BBQ salmon meal or a 1/2 Dungeness Crab meal depending on what is in season, as you sit out on the deck and looking over the water. The Hoonah Beach House is in a very beautiful area of Hoonah and provides a calming view of the water, where you may even have an opportunity to spot some humpback whales--right off the deck!
