From Golden to Gilded Age Walking Tour

This "Newport, R.I.: From Colonial to Gilded Age" tour explores Newport, Rhode Island in the years between the Revolutionary War and the Gilded Age of the late 19th century. These decades witnessed a remarkable transformation as Newport, ravaged by the war, unexpectedly became a popular resort town.

Thanks to the vision of early developers, the experimentation of architects, and the hype generated by the artists who summered here, the Newport community underwent dramatic changes in architecture, economy, population and ideologies. By exploring these in-between years, visitors who have seen Newport's colonial neighborhoods and mansions will come to understand how Newport went from Golden Age to Gilded Age.

The tour begins at the Museum of Newport History in the heart of Newport's Old Quarter, then proceeds uphill towards the 19th century section of town and historic Bellevue Avenue. Some of the sites you will pass include the Colony House, the Barney Street burying ground, the Viking Hotel, the Muenchinger-King building, the Redwood Library, the Newport Art Museum, and the Old Stone Mill (aka Newport's Mystery Tower).

At the end of the tour you will have the opportunity to visit the Newport Historical Society's Museum and Shop at the Brick Market (Please Note: There is a suggested donation of $4 US per adult and $2 US per child over the age of five if you wish to visit the museum). This award-winning institution provides people of all ages with an engaging introduction to the area's rich history and the beauty of its architecture. Glimpse the lives of the people --past and present-- who have made Newport one of America's most historic cities.

Please note: Tour does not include any interior visits.
