Private Cold War and Reunification
Private Cold War and Reunification
In this private excursion, you'll gain a deeper insight into the years of separation, the reunification and the differences between the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany.
After meeting your professional tour guide, depart the pier and drive into the city center of Rostock, where you will pass by concrete block buildings from the 1960s and become familiarized with typical architecture in the former German Democratic Republic.
You will take a short tour of the Stasi prison, seeing the areas that have been opened to the public, and catch a glimpse at a prison cell. With original documents and pictures on display, history will come alive within these walls.
Then drive to the Technical Museum in Putnitz, approximately 45 minutes away. A variety of both familiar and unknown technology (predominately automotive and aviation) from the former Eastern Bloc is exhibited at a former Russian military air base. The exhibits are displayed in three aircraft hangars and other smaller buildings. Follow your guide through the grounds filled with various forms of transportation from the cold war days. You will see old "Tschaikas" (limousines of the former Russian Government) as well as "Trabis" (a popular car during the times of the German Democratic Republic). True to the motto "all hands on," you can touch the vehicles.
On your way back you will have the opportunity to ask your guide more questions about the times of the cold war and reunification in Germany.
