Mt. Vesuvius Adventure
Mt. Vesuvius Excursion

I am giving this excursion 5 stars because it was well organized and the guide was pleasant and accommodating. I would like to warn participants that the 4WD is a 4WD bus that does a lot of bouncing during a 20 minute ride to the hiking point. I would not recommend this trip if you have a bad back or neck. Also, it is a 20 minute hike, not walk to the top.

It's harder than it sounds!

I am glad that we chose this tour- not many people can say they have been on the crater of any volcano. The experience was spectacular and breathtaking. I do feel that the description listed for this tour isn't accurate though. It states that one must be able to step onto the 4x4 vehicle and walk 20 minutes to the crater of the volcano from the vehicle. The word 'climb' is much more accurate than the words step and walk!! Getting to the crater from the vehicle is a strenuous climb on a fairly narrow path. Not dangerous, but strenuous. A good amount of time was allowed at the crater. One complaint that I have is that this tour left the cruise port at 10:30AM, so most of us had a big breakfast and didn't intend to eat lunch. But we were taken to a restaurant prior to climbing the volcano. This was not in the tour description and because of this we returned to the port over an hour after we should have and we had to cancel other plans in Naples so as not to miss our ship's departure.

Mt. Vesuvius 4WD Adventure
December 11, 2016
The Pompei excursion proceeded ours with the same guide, so their last stop was private lunch at a restaurant which we hadn't counted on or really come prepared for the extra expense. It was a nice lunch though and then we proceeded to the 4x4 vehicles. Enjoyed the hike to the volcano and views from there. The 5 minute presentation by the vulcanologist was a bit disappointing and basic. I was fortunate to get a chance to talk with Park Ranger at the bottom while waiting for the 4x4 vehicle to come pick us back up. She was very informative about the local vegetation and history and was very willing to share her knowledge.

Amazing to be standing on history

We've all read and learned about Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii but to be standing on the top looking down into the crater was amazing! The vehicle took us to the upper parking where we had to hike up the rest of the volcano to the top. It was a tough climb for me but VERY worth it!! The path is loose dirt/gravel so definitely wear appropriate shoes.
