Punta Tombo Penguin Rookery
Penguins Everywhere
April 22, 2023
This was an excellent excursion. We had been told that going at the end of March was late in the season, and that most of the penguins had already left for the winter. But there were thousands upon thousands of Magellanic penguins everywhere you looked. Many were very close to the walkway, or even on it, and were not afraid of people. Many good photo opportunities.
Being late in the season many of the penguins were molting, which was interesting to see.
The drive to the rookery from the port is long, a little over 2 1/2 hours, but well worth it.
We were in a small group of 8 tourists in a full size van that could hold 13 tourists, so we were very comfortable.

This excursion was as expected and very good. The guide did an excellent lecture abut the Magellan Penguins and what to expect at this time of the year.

Punta Tombo Penguins & More

We wish we could remember our tour guide's name since she made this experience fantastic. She was a retired school English teacher and she was so knowledgeable and made this day such a delightful experience. We not only enjoyed the whole experience walking among the Penguins, but she shared so much information about he Patagonia area, the incredible Welsh settlers, the climate etc. She prepared us well to enjoy and respect the penguins. We highly recommend this tour and especially our guide and driver!

Great Tour

Recommend. It takes about 2 hours to get to the Rookery. The tour used a convenient mini-bus, which arrived before the cruise organized tour large busses. The "lunch" is not much and was served on the bus while driving back to the ship, but still better than "no lunch".

Excellent visit

I did this tour 16 years ago with another company, and this one is far better, as well as Tombo is far better organized and run that back then.
we hung around waiting for two people who never showed up. We pre-paid our tour, however no one else did, and that explains why there were no shows. I suggest a mandatory deposit being initiated to ensure people are serious. Thus we left late, but were able to get to the Rookery before all the huge buses, but only by about 20 minutes. Would have been nice to get there earlier.
Our guide and driver were great. Lunch was ok, but as i was not even expecting a lunch i cannot complain. Van was clean and had a good driver.
Would recommend over the big buses any time. Got there faster and did not have to wait around for slow pokes. We had a nice manageable size of 6 people, and that was perfect.

We beat the crowd out to the penguin reserve and actually had a fair amount of time there before the large tour buses from the ship arrived.
