Avignon and Wine

Continuously inhabited since the Stone Age, the city of Avignon became a refuge for popes fleeing corruption in 14th-century Rome. This small-group tour is designed to provide an intimate and personal look at Avignon with a local, knowledgeable guide.

During this tour you will see the imposing Le Palais des Papes, or the Pope's Palace, that has the world's largest Gothic facade. Admire the iconic 12th-century Saint-Benezet bridge, famous for the children's song Sur le pont d'Avignon, that spans the Rhone River and was rebuilt several times before being abandoned in the 17th century (entrance fees to attractions are at your own discretion and are not included).

Continue your day with a walk through the vineyards around Chateauneuf du Pape, a commune just north of Avignon. Learn about terroir, the environmental qualities that affect the outcome of a wine, as well as the region's various grape varieties and the secrets of vinification and aging cellars.

Pop into a local winery for an exquisite wine tasting before your return trip to Marseille. During the tour you will have free time for lunch (not included) on your own.
