Chilkat Photography Tour - Haines
Capture Haines with Memorable Photography
Escape the crowds of Skagway and focus on photographing the stunning scenery of the Chilkat Valley. Cradled at the base of the Chilkat Peninsula, flanked by the Lynn Fjord and Chilkat River, Haines is filled with natural wonders. Your expert photographer/guide will assist you in capturing the best of the Chilkat Valley's unique attractions.
This Skagway cruise trip begins with a 45-minute ride via a 100-passenger shuttle catamaran along the steep-walled fjords that connect Skagway to Haines. Arrive in Haines, and meet your professional photographer/guide.
Your guide will select his favorite locations and provide you with ample time to set up the best shots. Depending on the lighting and weather, different locations in the Chilkat Valley boast specific photographic highlights. Your professional photographer/guide will have previously scouted out the best areas for the day's photo shoot. May, June, and July feature wildflowers and eagles. Beginning in August, pink salmon - the smallest and most abundant of the Pacific salmon varieties - begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn. This is the best opportunity to see brown bear as they are often witnessed feeding along the banks of the river. When bears are present, every effort will be made to give you safe bear viewing and photography.
The theme is flexibility, fun and learning rather than adherence to a rigid schedule. Even a simple point-and-shoot camera will work, but by all means, bring all your photo gear. The tour includes a boxed lunch so that you can eat when you want to and focus on getting the shots that you desire. You'll return to Skagway via shuttle catamaran.
This tour requires a moderate amount of walking to reach the best vantage points, some of which is over uneven or unpaved terrain. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilize a wheelchair. This tour, designed with an emphasis on photography, is led by a local, professional photographer. Participants must provide all photographic equipment; experience in photography is not necessary. Dress in layers, bring rain gear and a day pack to protect your equipment, and wear sturdy footwear. Capturing wildlife on film is one of the goals but cannot be guaranteed. Actual locations visited and sequence of locations will be determined based on current conditions and guide's discretion

We went on this tour in August 2016 with Tom. Tom was a great guide - he was knowledgeable about both photography and about wildlife. While it rained alot of the time, Tom set us up with some incredible shots and taught us alot about our camera and photography. He made the day fun and productive. I would highly recommend this tour and Tom.

This was a great experience with a well trained guide. She offered a tone of help and tips. We went to some great places that non of the other photo tours did. I was able to capture photos of eagles in the nest, flying and in trees. I was also able to get great photos of other birds and wild life, flowers, waterfalls, landscapes, building and see so many other great aspects of the area. She was warm and welcoming to all questions I had and extremely knowledgeable of the area. I could not imagine going in a large group and having the same experience I did with this trip. This is a must if you like taking photos or just want some great memories and photos to share with all your friends when you get back. I have photos I was able to enlarge and hang on the walls that always get comments.
We appreciated the effectiveness of the organization. We were met at our ship. We were seen aboard the ferry to Haines, we were met in Haines. Our guide was genuinely personable, helpful and described what he had planned for us. The outcome was some superb photography and additionally some good recommendations on getting more out of our equipment. We made use of our guide's knowledge and his willingness to explain rationale. And we did get some really outstanding photos!
My wife and I took a photography excursion out of Haines AK. Emily, our tour guide was very friendly and easy going. She had a good knowledge of the area and where to look for wildlife. We were able to photograph some great landscape scenery at Chilkoot Lake and along the river. The best part was sighting a bear and then following and photographing it for about two hours as it walked along the river fishing. Great fun, beautiful scenery and entertaining watching the bear as he made his way down the Chilkoot River fishing.
