Ghosts and Gold Walking Tour

Looking for spirits of a different kind? Tucked away in the streets of Juneau you'll find historical buildings and remnants of the gold mining era. You will learn about Princess Sofia and her 352 passengers that were lost in the worst maritime accident in the history of British Columbia and Alaska, and where the few remains founds were laid to rest.

Your adventure begins after meeting your local, knowledgeable guide at the "Welcome to Juneau" sign for a quick meet and greet, then begin your walk along the dock to Front Street making your way to the Capital Building. From here you will next walk over to the House of Wickersham. This is a historic house and museum operated by the state of Alaska, memorializing the life of James Wickersham, an influential political leader in Alaska in the early 20th century. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and was included as a contributing property to Chicken Ridge Historic District in 1995.

From there you will walk the Basin Road through mountains along the same path the gold miners used and visit the Last Chance Mining Museum and Historic Park, which was in operation from 1916 to 1944. In the museum you will discover locomotives that transported gold miners, old mining shafts, industrial machinery, mineral collections and where the miners can still be heard talking to each other as if they were still mining the land today.

Turn back to town and end your journey walking to the Alaskan Hotel and Bar, the oldest operating hotel in Alaska with a haunted past of its own.
