Highlights of Ravenna
Spend 4 hours in the beautiful and enchanting Ravenna, a medieval city steeped in Byzantine-Roman history with several UNESCO World Heritage early Christian monuments.
Your guide will take you to see the Basilica of Sant' Apollinare Nuovo Church, this is the most important evidence of the encounter between Romanitas and Barbaritas. It was built between 493 and the beginning of the 6th century.
Head to the beautiful Basilica of San Vitale to see jaw dropping mosaic-lined walls and pretty Baroque frescoes. This church is regarded as one of Europe's most valued examples of Byzantine art and architecture. Don't miss seeing the Mausoleum of Galla Placida where cobalt blue mosaics embrace a dome of golden stars.
Take some time at Piazza San Francesco and make sure you see Dante's Tomb. Hidden at the end of a narrow side street at the Basilica of San Francesco, this controversial small marble mausoleum contains Italian poet Dante Alighieri's remains. Having been exiled from Florence, Dante's body was interred in Ravenna. Once his work became masterpiece-worthy, his bones were to be sent back to Florence under Papal order but the Franciscan monks had other ideas and hid the remains instead. Hundreds of years later Dante's remains were found inside the church walls and finally laid to rest in his tomb.
