Scenic Hike & Taiya River Raft Float Tour in Skagway, Alaska

Setting out from downtown Skagway toward your Scenic Hike and Float Excursion, you will drive 10 eye-popping miles along the coastal road to the head of the Chilkoot Trail in Dyea, once an abandoned Gold Rush town, and now a National Park.

On your 1.5 to 2 hour hike, you will retrace the steps of the Gold Rush stampeders on the famous Chilkoot Trail, hiking through a green, moss-covered northern temperate rainforest over uneven, hilly terrain for the first mile, and then on mostly flat ground for the remainder. The total elevation gain on this Skagway shore trip is 300 feet. You will learn about the gold rush and natural history, and have time for taking photos. The total distance hiked on this moderate trail is approximately 2 miles.

At the end of the one-way hike, you will meet with the raft and suit up for a relaxing river float on the tranquil Taiya River. Along with your group of at most 11 guests, you will sit back and let your guide do the paddling. As you float along, they will point out wildlife, native plants, and tell stories of the area's fascinating history. The float time on this Skagway rafting excursion is approximately 40 to 45 minutes on the river. After the rafting, enjoy a riverside snack.

Please Note: The hiking part of this Alaska tour is strenuous and requires guests to be in good physical shape.

Recommended Dress
For all Alaska tours, we recommend layers of clothing, with the top layer being water-proof. We also suggest comfortable walking shoes that may get wet. Please wear socks. Lifejackets, rubber boots, and a long rain poncho are provided for the raft portion only.
Guests must be in good physical condition for the 1.5-2 hour hike. Those with back, knee, hip, or balance issues should consider their participation in this activity. Due to safety reasons and keeping on tour schedule, your guide will strongly advise against participation in the hike if they feel it to be too strenuous for your ability level. An alternate arrangement will be made so you can still participate in the float portion. All participants must sign a Visitor Acknowledgement of Risks form at the time of the tour. Children under 18 require parent or legal guardian signature. A parent must accompany any child under 16. The minimum age to participate is 5 years old. The tour does operate in rainy weather, so please dress in layers for your comfort. There is a maximum of 11 guests per raft.

For those looking for some exercise and to see nature, this is a great excursion. A walk through a rain forest, then a gentle float trip back down the river. The guide was great and very knowledgeable of the vegetation and the area. We counted 10 different eagle sightings on the float.

We went with our 7 year old son and nearly 10 year old daughter. Our kids loved the float portion of the excursion. We saw lots of bald eagles. The hike was nice and we didn't get too wet even though it was raining. We just wish the tour guide was more experienced and knowledgeable.

I was hesitant to go on this excursion, it talks about many steps up and down, I hate the elliptical! We are so glad we decided to try it! Don't let the talk about stairs scare you. Our group consisted of 10 people, most of us were in our 40-60year range. No, one had trouble. Don't be fooled, it is not easy, the terrain is rocky and full of large tree roots but it was worth the effort! Our guide was very knowledgeable about the forest. The hike was well paced, with many opportunities to stop, rest and appreciate nature. The raft portion was restful and really and allowed time to appreciate the mountains and wildlife. FABULOUS! Would I do this one again? YES!
