Juneau City with Glacier View and Hatchery
Juneau is one of the most unique state capitals in the United States. Although Juneau isn't an island, it is land locked, and you can only get to it by air or sea. This exciting half-day program will give you an orientation of Juneau, and a stop at Brotherhood Bridge for a view of the Mendenhall Glacier.
Your excursion begins in the historical downtown district, where you will see the streets lined with gift shops, jewelry shops, king crab shacks and local fish restaurants. This Juneau tour will take you right by the Governor's Mansion, the State Capitol, and the world-famous Red Dog Saloon.
Departing the downtown area, you will make your way to famous Douglas Island, a historic mining community, for photo opportunities and panoramic views across the water of downtown Juneau with spectacular views of the cruise ship port.
Continue north to the Valley Area and Brotherhood Bridge. Along the way you will see small harbors filled with Alaskan fishing boats, as well as the Mendenhall Wetland Refuge. On clear days you can also see the majestic Chilkat Mountains. Your next stop will be Brotherhood Bridge where you will have approximately 15 minutes for spectacular photo opportunities viewing the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier.
Your last stop will be at the Ladd Macaulay Visitor Center where you are invited to learn about the fascinating life cycle of salmon, their near shore marine environment, and the inner workings of a hatchery. Through a variety of exhibits and commentaries this center offers a fun and educational experience for the entire family. Get a birds-eye-view of hatchery operations and learn about the life cycle of pacific salmon during an informative commentary by an experienced local guide. Watch millions of baby king and coho salmon grow from the sky bridge in the rearing facility all year. Witness the masses of adult salmon fighting their way up the fish ladder late June - September. Explore the salt water aquariums displaying over 150 species of marine life and interact with local sea critters in the tide pool touch tank area.
Re-board your transportation for a comfortable ride returning you back to the main cruise ship terminal.
