Whale Watching in Juneau

Your Alaska Whale Watching Cruise adventure begins with a short drive to a scenic harbor. Here, you will board a mammal-friendly jet boat equipped with water jet drives to ensure a quiet underwater operation without dangerous propellers that may frighten or harm the animals. The boats have an enclosed and heated cabin, complete with indoor plumbing. In addition, the boat only holds a maximum of 40 guests. There are large viewing windows and an outdoor viewing deck that provide an up-close and personal experience while you observe and photograph the animals in their natural surroundings.

You will be on the boat for approximately two hours on this Juneau cruise excursion, in an area that the whales frequent every summer. After the whale watching tour, your transportation will take you back to downtown Juneau.

I had originally booked a tour for a smaller group of 20 (we had 11 in our group) but that was cancelled. This tour was supposed to be up to 40 people, but we were the only participants! Everyone was wonderful! Our bus driver spoke while he drove, pointing out highlights, and stopped twice for photo ops - at the Mendenhall glacier and by the bronze whale fountain. The boat was wonderful - a very high speed jet propulsion boat. The captain and naturalist gave us so much information! We saw dozens and dozens of fishing bald eagles. And there were whales - 2 at a time. We watched for over 45 minutes as the whales breached and dove, rolled and flirted with us. On the way back, we saw a pod of killer whales! While I am sure that wildlife tours are unpredictable, we were fortunate to have the chance to see so much.

Great trip. Very accessible. Van picked us up at the ship dock and unloaded at the boat. Saw several humpback whales with one of them getting to within 15 yards of the boat

Whale watch

The whale watch crew was very knowledgeable and informative about the whales. We were able to view a cow and calf from a distance. It would have been nice to get a bit closer to the whales, but I understand the need to keep a safe distance. Logistically, everything went well. We had to take a short bus ride from the cruise pier to the whale watch boat. The bus driver was super nice and friendly and pointed things out to us along the route.

This excursion was a great purchase. The trip was great, our captain was expert, we saw numerous animals and had a wonderful time. Since another ship was late and we could not wait on them due to our onboard time, we essentially had a private tour. Fellow passengers who booked through the cruise line were jealous when we reported our lack of croweds.

The native, female shuttle driver to the boat was excellent and provided many interesting anecdotes while pointing out landmarks, etc.! The two young women who operated this tour boat (captain and naturalist) were great and you could tell that they know their stuff and LOVE their jobs! We had 9 sightings (they knew the name of each whale) and got to see Mendenhall and several other glaciers from the water! Exactly what I wanted!!
