Orca's Cove Kayaking
Ketchikan Orca's Cove Kayak Tour
Orca's Cove is a very popular Ketchikan shore excursion, specially designed for people looking for a true wilderness experience. Orca's Cove is a serene wilderness location, far from the bustle of town and the busy cruise ship docks. For a more personal experience, our group size is limited to six guests per trip (or private groups of up to 12), and this Ketchikan tour is not sold on board cruise ships.
The old-growth forest presses right down to the shoreline, and the intertidal zone of over 20 feet is home to a colorful array of creatures. Several bald eagle nests are active in the area, and we often have the opportunity to observe these remarkable birds in their homes. By its very nature, we never know what wildlife we will see on any particular day - that's part of the excitement. Humpback whales, orcas, porpoises, seals and sea lions all inhabit these waters. Along the shore we may see river otters, minks, deer, and occasionally black bears. Our guides are trained naturalists who will enthusiastically share their love of the land with you.
This Ketchikan cruise tour is at a relaxed pace, covering approximately three miles during the 1 and a half hours of paddling. The goal is to enjoy the wilderness and explore the shoreline, not to set any speed records. There are many opportunities for photographing the exceptional scenery and wildlife.
On this excursion in Ketchikan, you will travel by boat to remote Orca's Cove. Along the way you will pass Ketchikan Creek, Saxman Totem Park and all the surrounding islands from the water and have a great chances to see marine wildlife. Upon arrival at the cove, you will meet your guides and become familiar with kayaking. After a basic lesson, you will take off paddling, wandering amongst numerous islands, immersing yourself in the surroundings, and keeping a lookout for wildlife. After paddling, you will enjoy a snack of the finest locally caught and smoked silver salmon, along with hot drinks, before returning to town by boat.
Please Note: All participants must be able to step into a 55" spray-skirt tube and pull it up to the chest. This tour is not recommended for guests weighing in excess of 275 pounds. Guests who are unable to fit in the kayaks will not be refunded. Trips fill very quickly due to the small group size, so please book early to avoid disappointment. Dry bags are provided to protect your camera or video recorder. We ask that you dress in warm, comfortable layers. Paddling jackets and rain pants are provided, along with spray skirts on the kayaks to help keep you dry. Triple kayaks for families with younger children, and especially-adapted kayaks for guests over 6' 3" may be availabile upon request. All other guests will be fitted with double sea kayaks.
Would do this tour again and again. Beautiful warm weather and so many animals, whales, seals, eagles. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly.

My husband and I loved this excursion. We really enjoyed being one of only three kayaks, The guide was amazing and friendly and it was absolutely beautiful. We did not see any wildlife unfortunately, but the guide made it clear there was no guarantee. I would definitely recommend this excursion.

This was the best excursion of my Alaska trip. From the pilot of the motor boat that took us to the cove, to the crew of the cabin cruiser that kept the kayaks, to the delicious snack of locally smoked salmon (Orcas Cove Select), and especially to our guide, everything was professional, friendly, and fun. The kayaking was good exercise but not overly strenuous, the coastline was beautiful, and the eagles plentiful. Our guide pointed out an ancient pictograph, and he explained it well.
We had a wonderful excursion at Orca's Cove kayaking. Everything was very smooth from meeting at the visitor's center to transporting out to the cove. Amber was our guide - she was very knowledgeable and friendly. Bella was the floating 'home base' captain and she made us feel right at home. The both had amazing local knowledge and were happy to answer questions. The scenery was beautiful. This is a great excursion for those wanting a bit of adventure!
