We really liked this tour in Ketchikan...our guide was great and so enthusiastic about teaching us things, you could tell she knew a lot about it! To be honest we have considered purchasing a totem for our home and was interested to learn from our guide that when you see a face on the body of a totem (not just its head), that means it's where its strength is. So, when we did buy one in Ketchikan to have shipped home, we found one with faces on it too (chest of Eagle, tail and dorsal fin of Orca). Our friends and family think it's really interesting too! I've been reading a few books about the local ones in Alaska too, after this trip. So it inspired me to learn more!

One of the highlights of Ketchikan

So many beautiful totem poles to enjoy here, examples of the Tlingit culture. Pole carvings tell a story, our guide explained the different poles to us, who carved them. The Clan House was a real experience, Guide explained the central fireplace, could have housed to 30-50 people. Adorned with so many beautiful carvings. When in Ketchikan, a truly must see.

... for 75 year old mother. History, cultural education, great totems, and not too much walking. The gift shop stop at the end was cheaper than in town.
