Maori Cultural Experience

Enjoy stunning views with personalized attention from your local, friendly and knowledgeable guide when you tour the Huriawa peninsula. The province and region of Otago takes its name from the Nga Tahu village of Otakou at the mouth of the harbor, which became a whaling station in the 1830s. Your friendly and knowledgeable guides will entertain and inform you with the vibrant history and stories of the Pa (fortified village). Learn about the siege of Pa a Te Wera, a six-month-long campaign, and how the Pa was successfully defended by Te Wera's people. This is a unique opportunity to visit the world famous Moeraki Boulders, Dunedin city sights and experience local Maori culture all in one day.

Depart Dunedin's Cruise Ship terminal and journey north along the stunning Otago coastline to the seaside village of Karitane. Here you will meet a local Maori guide as you explore the area. After a customary Maori welcome, you will be guided on a scenic walk through remnants of a Maori Village and Pa (warrior fortifications), visit a cemetery for early Europeans and ancient Maori burial grounds and take in beautiful coastal views as you hear stories from a time long ago. On top of this you will be given the opportunity to plant a native tree or shrub on the Pa site to help restore the area and leave something to perhaps come back and visit in the future.

After the walk, be treated to a small collection of local delicacies as well as a cup of tea or coffee to re-energize you before you bid farewell to Karitane.

Continue with a short drive from here to the Moeraki Boulders where you will have a chance to walk on the beach and get up close to these giant round rocks. The mysterious Moeraki Boulders are millions of years old and time and tide have left them exposed on the shore, although at times they are surrounded or submerged in the waves. Your trip is planned to avoid the high tide so you may see the boulders and your guide will tell you of their geological origin as well as the Maori legend about their creation. Take this chance for incredible photo opportunities while at one of NZ's most amazing places.

Drive back to Dunedin City and experience some of city sights, this lively town is brimming with beautiful Victorian architecture, cozy cafes, and the vibrant University of Otago. While here, take in the highlights including Baldwin Street - the world' steepest road, the Grand Railway Station and if time permits a stop at the shops in the Octagon (city centre) before making your way back to the cruise ship pier.

This well-rounded cultural tour offers something for everyone and will sell out fast as space is limited! Sign up today for a day in Dunedin you will always remember.
