Otway Sound Penguin Rookery
Otway Sound Penguin Rookery
Thousands of Magellanic penguins are waiting for you in the Otway Sound Penguin Colony. They can't wait to see you!
Depart Punta Arenas for a drive 40 miles northwest into the Patagonian countryside over mostly unpaved roads, past huge sheep farms. En route, you may spot some of the local wildlife, in spite of their camouflage, as well as guanacos and rheas.
A one-mile hike across grassland interspersed with sandy areas leads to a specially developed enclosure at Otway Sound, where you are able to observe the delightful Magellanic penguins at close quarters.
Every year between October and March, these penguins favor the shelter of the sandy burrows and surrounding shrubs, returning year after year to lay eggs and raise their young. There will be plenty of time to observe these marvelous birds.
Wild geese and foxes may be seen on the return, as part of the rich fauna of the Chilean Patagonia. This tour is a real treat for nature lovers!
Please Note: This tour requires the payment of a 7500 Chilean pesos (approximately $16 US) per person National Park entrance fee. This fee can only be paid upon entering the park, and is subject to change by local authorities without notice.
