Portugal is “a garden, by the Atlantic planted” as the greatest Portuguese poet, Luís de Camoes, described it. Founded in 1139, it was the first nation-state of the West and has a long maritime history culminating with the discovery of India in 1498. Considered the 4th safest country in 2019 by the World Economic Forum, it has an average of 250 days of sun per year, great food and even better wine with 12 Wine Demarcated Regions.
