Tour Details

A visit to a Rasta indigenous village is the most unique way to experience the life of a true Rastafarian. Rastafari, also known as Rastafarianism, is a young, African-centered religion and social movement developed in Jamaica in the 1930s following the coronation of Haile Selassie I as King of Ethiopia in 1930.

In the village, you will learn about the philosophies and the ways of the Rastafarian movement including the herbs, and spices used as natural remedies for wellness and health maintenance, and the role of Hailie Selassie in their religion.

The tour of the vegan village incorporates music, drumming and chanting typically including the recitation Psalms, but also includes variations of Christian hymns adopted over the decades; all of which are the foundations of reggae music.

Reggae music is the voice of the Rastafarians, and it elevates and stimulates the Rastafari mental faculties. Bob Marley, Burning Spear, and Jimmy Cliff are the most famous reggae artists. However, there's a long list of Rastafari musicians that have used the music genre to establish Rastafari as a global reality.

In the village, you will be invited to sample the "ital" cuisine commonly consumed by the Rastafarians with ingredients directly from the Earth; traditional foods include callaloo (vegetable), beans, coconuts, and peas. Ital is thought to stem from the word vital, meaning natural, organic, fresh, and pure. You won't find salts and sugars here; for Rastas, the choice to eat ital is a spiritual one saluting health while respecting the lives of fellow animals.

If you are intrigued by Rastafarianism or inspired by reggae music, this unique visit to a Rasta indigenous village will fulfill you in more ways than one.

Interesting experience
February 28, 2020
It's a long walk from the ship to the meeting place for this tour. Our tour operator was late, but our driver, Jerry was great. Before signing up for this, it's a good idea to read up on the Rastafari history and culture. That will give you a better perspective on the experience. You need to recognize that this is an important income source for this group. Lots of crafts for sale including jewelry and soaps. Nice people, different lifestyle. We didn't stay for lunch because we had to get back to our ship. Too bad we missed out on that.
