Romantic Obidos and Foz do Arelho Beach
Step back in time as you visit Obidos, a 13th-century medieval village with a tradition of being the wedding gift to all of Portugal's queens, starting with King Diniz and his young bride Isabel of Aragon. You'll feel as though you've stepped back in time when you pass through the city's arched gates and take to its narrow streets.
While here, visit the 17th century Parish Church of Santa Maria proudly standing in the city square, and step inside to admire the vaulted ceiling as well as the beautiful blue and white tiled decorations. This church was converted to a mosque during the Muslim period before reverting to a Christian house of worship. Enjoy some free time to browse the local shops, hike up to the castle turned hotel, or take the old lookout path on top of the city wall for magnificent views of the vineyards and surrounding area.
From there you will head to Foz do Arelho, a relatively undeveloped beach backed by a river mouth estuary where you can observe the local fishermen and pop into one of the relaxed bars or restaurants for a drink or snack before your return trip to port. Be sure to try the Ginja de Obidos (cherry liqueur in a chocolate cup), the area's national obsession! Experience the romantic side of Portugal when you book this small tour of Obidos and Foz do Arelho.
