Learn about the history of this beautiful landscape by your local guides who have lived here for up to five generations.
Visit Pohatu Bay on the outer coast, be in awe of the panoramic views all the way down to the water, and then continue to a working sheep farm and a penguin colony.
This is a fantastic chance to interact with the friendly pet sheep which you can feed by hand for a real kiwi experience.
The excitement continues as you monitor penguin nesting boxes and learn of the conservation work being conducted in the largest colony of little penguins on mainland New Zealand. This tour was one of the highlights of our trip. Our vehicle climbed a steep, winding road. At the top we had an excellent overlook, where we saw our ship at anchor. We then proceeded to visit a marine reserve -- a private farm -- that rescues Blue Penguins, nurses them back to health, and then releases them into the wild. The guide that we had is part of the family that operates the reserve, and she was passionate about her work. We saw lots of penguins in their burrows, where they raise their chicks. I am very glad that we took this tour.

picked up easily, tour was well organized, small van group. our guide Joey , friendly and informative, raised on the land where we were headed. The weather was stormy and cool, but spent time out on a ranch and bay,and where the penguins nest. She was caring for one with a broken wing. would strongly recommend this trip, well worth the price.
