Windmills and Countryside Hop On Hop Off Bus and Boat

This full day tour in Amsterdam is perfect for those who like to explore on their own at their own pace, seeing exactly what they want. Your tour includes both a Hop On, Hop Off bus ticket and a one-way boat ride from Volendam to Marken. You will have a GPS audio guide available in five languages, a free app with the route information which lets you track the location of the buses in real time, and walking tours, so you get the most of your visit to traditional Holland.

Departing from Amsterdam Central Station, this audio-guided hop on, hop off bus trip will give you all the time you want to explore the authentic countryside of Amsterdam. Six stops include Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans, Volendam, Marken, Monnickendam and Broek in Waterland, with a final return to Amsterdam. After exploring Amsterdam, your first stop is the famous windmill village of Zaanse Schans, where you can visit a true working windmill. This neighborhood in the Dutch town of Zaandam, near Amsterdam, includes historic windmills and distinctive green wooden houses that were relocated here to recreate the look of an 18th/19th-century village. The Zaans Museum has regional costumes, model windmills, and interactive exhibits on chocolate making. Artisan workshops demonstrate rare handicrafts such as wooden clog carving, barrel making, and pewter casting.

Up next, Volendam, where you get the wonderful opportunity to taste authentic Dutch cheese at the Cheese Factory Volendam and try syrup waffles at the old Dutch bakery Woltje's. Located on the Markermeer Lake, northeast of Amsterdam, Volendam is known for its colorful wooden houses and the old fishing boats in the harbor, which you will find is lined with seafood vendors. While in Volendam, you can experience a true taste of the local area by eating fish and chips at the local restaurant De Lunch (at your own expense).

Your next sightseeing location is Marken. From Volendam you can continue to Marken with the scenic and enjoyable boat ride that adds extra adventure to your day. Your countryside experience is enhanced with this fun and relaxing boat trip on the Ijsselmeer. Have your camera ready because panoramic views of the old fishing villages are guaranteed along the route. In Marken you can watch a live demonstration by a clog maker. After Marken, you can check out the famous harbour of Monnickendam and see the painted houses in picturesque Broek in Waterland.

Please Note: Be aware that the buses drive in one direction only. For example: when you hop off at Marken, it is not possible to go back to Volendam. When you return to Amsterdam you are not able to re-use your bus ticket. The buses run every 30 to 45 minutes. The tours are narrated in English, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, and German. First and last tour times will be detailed in your electronic ticket.
