Lush, tropical grounds near a beautiful beach are home to a rescue clinic and zoo. Created by animal lovers, the zoo showcases dozens of native healthy birds, butterflies, and animals, and nursing other unfortunate animals back to health. Book this Colon tour now for incredible insight into animal rescue in Panama.
Whether the animal was injured, orphaned, or abused, the zoo employs their motto: "Saving one animal will not change the world, but the world will change for that one animal." Led by college graduates who've specialized in plant or animal studies, the tour guides provide both insight and unbelievable access to birds, monkeys, butterflies, sloths, and more.
For instance, the walk through aviary is over 100 feet long with 26 bird species, including spectacled owls, yellow (green and red) fronted parrots, scarlet macaws, peacocks, and keel-billed toucans. Because you're enclosed with the birds in Panama's largest aviary, you have the unique opportunity to interact with the birds, unlike many typical zoos.
Upon entering the butterfly enclosure, you'll encounter hundreds of spectacularly colored tropical butterflies living in their lush natural habitat. This Colon tour is a truly treasured experience, offering a one-of-a-kind photo-op with these friendly creatures.
The animal clinic features animals in varied stages of care. Ministerio del Ambiente, Panama's National Environmental Authority often brings animals to the rescue clinic. Here, you'll see some animals quarantined for observation, others rehabilitating injuries, and some who have returned to health but are deemed unable to adapt to the wild, thus remaining in care.
Your Colon tour concludes in the gift shop. Your purchases help cover the expenses of animal care provided at the zoo. After the tour, enjoy a delicious Caribbean meal with one non-alcoholic beverage. A vegetarian option is available. You can eat on the grounds or visit the beach nearby. Additionally, you'll visit a local beach resort. Book this tour today for a fascinating shore excursion at a low price.
Hubby and I agree this is one of the best shore excursions we've ever taken - and we've now taken a dozen cruises to ports all over the world. The price was quite reasonable for what we received: a private tour conducted by the rescue center's owner, a visit to interesting 16th century native ruins, and a marvelous Panamanian lunch served on a beautiful beach. Who knew we like yucca? I would book this excursion again in a heartbeat, and highly recommend it!

Seeing the extent of the work of animal rescue in Panama was very encouraging and gratifying, and hearing the owner's explanation of the areas' history, government and development on the drive to the zoo was interesting. The day was overcast and rainy so we had no beach experience, and while the atmosphere at the restaurant where we were taken for lunch was charming, we thought the food was just so so.
