An Insider’s Guide For Stopover Cruisers in Miami

Miami Shore Excursions

With Miami literally in our backyard, we know a thing or two about this incredible city! A melting pot of creativity and innovation, Miami is an iconic destination for cruisers from all around the world. From must-see landmarks like the Freedom Tower to the vivid colors of the Art Deco District, Miami is the perfect place for anyone looking for an unforgettable time.

Discover the Magic of Miami

If the name Miami conjures up visions of Crockett and Tubbs chasing down the bad guys amidst a gorgeous backdrop of beaches, palm trees, and bikinis, think again! Little did the show’s producers know that Miami Vice would be the precursor to a major metropolitan metamorphosis: no longer a sleepy retirement beach town, Miami is all glitter, all glamor, and all grown up!

Truth be told, Miami was always the center of attention. The area was a prominent trading outpost for the Tequesta Indians at the mouth of the Miami River. In modern times it was founded in 1896 by Julia Tuttle, a citrus grower, who bought the land and convinced Henry Flagler to bring his railroad down to the region (fun fact: she is the only woman who has founded a major city in the United States). The arrival of immigrants, the relocation of northerners, and the use of Miami as a base for defense in WWII all helped to fuel Miami’s expansion and put it on the map.

Today, Miami is a bustling hub for finance, commerce, tourism, and international trade. It is known for its celebrities, successful sports franchises, enticing beaches, sizzling nightlife, and some of the best cuisine in the nation. It’s also the nation’s busiest cruise port, with many things to see and do before, during, or after your cruise. Spend a day here and you’ll quickly understand why Miami is known as the Magic City.

Weather

The weather in Miami is frequently the same temperature as the town: hot, hot, HOT! There are two seasons – summer, and Second summer (meaning, a mild fall/winter). Summers can get downright hot and sticky, with daytime highs in the 90s; daytime temps in the winters typically range in the high 60s to low 70s — but you wouldn’t know it by the way the locals can bundle up!

The rainy season tends to run from May to October, with sunny mornings followed by showers in the afternoons, with the rain usually coming on strong and leaving just as quickly.

Being on the Atlantic, the city carefully monitors the weather during Hurricane Season which runs from June through November. Miami has been fortunate to dodge many a ‘Cane throughout the years, but rest assured it has plenty of notice and well-established hurricane plans in place if need be.

Things to Do

What to see while in Miami? What’s NOT to see? This is a city that literally has it all. Whether you are in town for a few hours or a few days, there are always things to do in Miami. Here are some ideas to show you just what we mean:

City Tours

Art Deco District Miami

*One of the best ways to explore Miami is on an open top bus to the city’s top sites. Close to the port is Freedom Tower, a US national historical landmark standing proud against the modern buildings downtown. Nearby is the Wynwood neighborhood with its vibrant collection of street art and bohemian vibes. Further out you will experience Little Havana — a slice of Cuba in Miami — with its famous Calle Echo (Eighth Street) which hosts Miami’s biggest street party each year. At Domino Park you will find tables full of hombres playing a serious game of dominos. Over on South Beach you will marvel at the Art Deco District with its colorful 40’s style buildings and shiny white sands.

For Kids of All Ages

*Experience the authentic side of Miami with a trip out to Everglades National Park. Skim along the water on an airboat in Florida’s renowned “River of Grass” to see alligators, native birds, and many other exotic wildlife. Walk the trails, then hold a baby gator as you smile for a photo!

Manatees are a favorite Miami animal attraction and they can be best found at Black Point Park and Marina. You can also keep an eye out for their snouts poking out of the water around Virginia Key as well as under the bridges around the Coral Gables Waterway.

In the Morning

Boat Ride Miami Shore Excursions 1024x621

*Enjoy a quiet morning on a boat in the beautiful waters of Biscayne Bay as you watch the morning coastline come to life before your very eyes. You will also have a chance to pass by the exclusive Fisher Island and see the celebrity mega houses along “Millionaire’s Row.”

In the Evening/Wee Hours

The Miami nighttime scene sizzles with many clubs on South Beach where you can dance the night away. The premiere place to be is the LIV Nightclub at the Fountainbleu — but be warned; the lines are long and it is very hard to get into.

Places You Can’t Miss While Exploring Miami

Bayfront Park — this 32 acre urban park just outside the port offers spectacular views of Biscayne Bay and the coastline. While here, check out the bronze statue of Christopher Columbus.

Ocean Drive — this 1.3 mile stretch of oceanfront drive in Miami Beach has starred in many films and television shows, and is a major draw for locals and tourists alike. Lined with palm trees, boutique shops and hotels, restaurants, and stunning architecture, this street literally lights up at night.

Down in Coconut Grove is the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens; this Mediterranean style villa with its art, fountains, pool, and lush gardens sits on the edge of Biscayne Bay and is a must-do for history and architecture buffs.

Dexter’s Apartment — see the Bay Harbor Island apartments where the fictional Dexter character lived in the popular television show Dexter (hint: his was 10B on the second floor)

Holocaust Memorial — this 40- foot high outstretched hand in Miami Beach is a haunting yet beautiful reminder of the six million Jews who died at the hands of the Nazis.

With so many things to do in Miami, we could go on forever! Here are some additional mentions for your consideration:

Miami Beach Shore Excursions

Crandon Park on South Beach is a family friendly alternative to the sometimes-more-rowdy northern beaches; nearby shops and restaurants provide a nice break from all the sun and waves.

South Pointe Park on the southern tip of Miami Beach gives you warm sands as well as great views of the Miami skyline from the South Pointe Pier; the park also has a playground for the kiddos.

Shopping and Dining

Miami is a veritable shopping mecca with just about any store you can think of! As for the food, the city’s eclectic culture shines through in the wide variety of Latin, Caribbean, European, and Southern fare. Fortunately there are many restaurants near the port of Miami.

The Shops

Just outside the port is Bayside Marketplace, a two-tier open air shopping complex with live music, a straw-type market, and well known shops including Victoria’s Secret and Champs. Dining options abound, from Mambo’s Cafe to Hard Rock Cafe.

The Brickell City Center in the heart of downtown spans over three city blocks and is a mixed-use space of offices, residential towers, and a hotel; four levels of fine dining, luxury shops, and entertainment are spread throughout.

Lincoln Road Mall is one of the nation’s first outdoor pedestrian malls; this charming shopping mecca on Miami Beach is an eight block stretch of cordoned off streets with more than 200 restaurants, upscale shops, and boutique stores.

The Food

On Miami Beach you will find Joe’s Stone Crab, an iconic restaurant with bluestone stone crab claws that will melt in your mouth. Starting in 1913 as a small lunch counter on the beach, this place blossomed into an upscale restaurant with a celebrity clientele over the years, serving everyone from Al Capone to Barbara Streisand and the Rolling Stones.

Head over to the iconic Versailles Restaurant in Little Havana, the hub for the Cuban expat community. Come for the history and a delicious taste of Cuba through its yuca fries, paella, fried pork chunks, Cuban sandwiches, and more. Then, top off your meal with some flan and cafe con leche, por supuesto (of course)!

Dine in splendor on mouth watering Italian Mediterranean fare at Gianni’s, a restaurant inside the Villa Casa Casuarina — the former 1930s mansion of beloved Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace.

Excursions and Cruises

*Day Cruises — A sightseeing cruise along Biscayne Bay is a great way to appreciate the skyline, especially if you are a returning visitor who hasn’t been to Miami in years. You’ll also ride around Fisher Island, a community so exclusive you can only visit it by invitation using a ferry.

FIshing Shore Excursion Miami

*Love to fish? Come enjoy a day on a sport fishing boat and scout out a variety of locations for your best chance at reeling in such fighters as tuna, sailfish, and marlin.

For those who have the time and interest in seeing what’s beyond Miami:

*Key Largo — though not actually part of the Florida Keys, this “key” of land is what you pass through from the Florida mainland to access the Keys. It is a major draw for water activities and for diving at John Pennekamp State Park.

*Key West — spend the day in Key West, affectionately referred to as the Conch Republic by the locals. You’ll take a comfortable, air-conditioned coach along the Overseas Highway through the Lower Keys, crossing 42 bridges including the famous Seven Mile Bridge to arrive at Key West where you can explore this charming island located at the very end of Florida — and just 90 miles across the water from Havana.

Key West Lighthouse

*While here you can check out the historical sites like the Key West Lighthouse, Mallory Square, and Hemingway House, or shop (and drink) along Duval Street. Hop on the Key West Conch Train for an overview of the island and its history. Or, take to the waters in a sailboat for a chance to snorkel among colorful tropical fish at the world’s third largest coral reef.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Time in Miami

Best Time to Visit

Any time is a great time to visit Miami, however…

  • If you want to avoid the crowds, stay far, far away during Spring Break
  • If you want to avoid intense heat, stick to visits in the spring or the fall
  • If you don’t want your plans to be canceled due to weather, avoid visiting between August and September (the hurricane season’s most active months)

Getting Around

Miami

Miami is a very spread-out city, so transportation is super important. You can hop the Metrobus, use a rideshare, or rent a car for longer distances. The Metrorail is a popular option; this elevated rail system can take you to Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, and the Miami Airport. You can also grab the trolley that runs between Bayside, downtown, and Coral Gables.

In the downtown area there is the Metro Mover — an elevated railway that loops around downtown, giving you a free and easy way to get around. Bonus: you get to enjoy a different view of the city from over 26 feet above the ground.

Please note:  Many of our excursions will offer complimentary pick up and return at your hotel.

Where to Stash Your Luggage

Check with your cruise line to see if they have luggage storage services (prior to cruise) or luggage forwarding services (post cruise). There are also places such as Bounce (at the port) or Luggage Lounge (on Miami Beach) where you can park your bags for a fee.

What to Pack

Speaking of luggage, when you pack for Miami, think of lightweight clothing for the warmer months and layers or a lightweight jacket for the cooler months. Sandals and walking shoes will comfortably take you most places you need to go. Sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen are musts. Bring business casual wear if you want to pop into one of the area’s nicer restaurants.

Do yourself a favor and plan at least a day — or two — around your cruise to experience all the sights, sounds, and flavor that Miami has to offer! Then contact us to hook you up with the best excursions to the area’s top places and things to do in Miami.
