Adventure to Altun Ha and Belize Zoo

Explore the ancient Mayan City of Altun Ha, located just 30 miles from Belize City. Set within a thick rain forest, Altun Ha was once a prosperous ceremonial hub, featuring dual main plazas, 13 temples and residential structures, among them the Temple of the Sun God.

As you tour the site, learn about the city's 2,200-year-old history, during which time it functioned as a trading link between the Caribbean coastline and the interior Maya centers during the Classic Mayan period. It's also here that Belize's famous Jade Head was discovered.

The jade carving depicts the Maya sun god, "Kinich Ahau," and weighs nearly 10 pounds. Its likeness is found on all Belizean currencies. The jade from which it was carved was from ancient mines along the Motagua River valley in eastern Guatemala.
