Patagonian Countryside and Penitente Estancia

Founded by British pioneers in the late 19th century, Penitente Estancia boasts a rich century-old legacy as a cattle ranch, offering you a chance to immerse yourself in Patagonian hospitality and savor a thrilling day in the countryside.

Step back in time as you head out to Penitente Estancia to enjoy a day in the life of a Patagonian ranch family. Many European families, including the family of pioneer Alexander Morrison, migrated to Magallanes in the 1800s to establish sheep farming in the region. Today Penitente Estancia is run by descendants of Mr. Morrison, keeping the traditional Patagonian farming spirit alive.

During your full-day adventure, you'll have the unique opportunity to witness an engaging farm machinery demonstration and explore the diverse activities of the farm. Experience the intricate art of sheep shearing, watching the shearer expertly remove the fleece. Sheep shearing requires a lot of skill, strength, and confidence as you handle the animal, who in turn benefits from the shearing, as an overgrown coat can attract parasites and cause overheating. You will also be treated to a sheepdog demonstration, marveling at the persistence of the dogs as they corral and direct the sheep.

Conclude your experience with a traditional Estancia feast that includes a welcome drink, mouthwatering empanadas, and a slow-grilled barbecue featuring the renowned Patagonian Lamb, affectionately known as Cordero al Palo. It's accompanied by a delectable assortment of vegetables, salads, and potatoes.
