Enjoy a private adventure through Sicily on this tour of Taormina and Castelmola. Head to the tiny town of Taormina, tucked into a mountainside on the east coast of Sicily. Modern meets historical in Taormina, a chic, tourist-friendly resort town that also features medieval and ancient sites.
With your free time, you can explore the town as you like. Many guests enjoy visiting the Teatro Greco, ruins of a theatre built in the 3rd century BC, as well as the Piazza del Duomo, which features a medieval Cathedral with an ornate fountain built in the 17th century.
Your day trip from Messina then heads to Castelmola for a tour into the mountains, where will find sweeping views of rumbling Mt. Etna and the stunning blue of the Gulf of Naxos.
This half day private tour of Taormina and Castelmola departs from the Messina cruise ship terminal upon your ship's arrival. This tour is available year round. Check the weather and dress for comfort on this tour. Light layers are suggested, and comfortable walking shoes are a must. Tickets for this tour do not include food, beverages, or entrance fees to museums or attractions. Snacks, however, will be available for purchase. Please note: this tour is not wheelchair accessible.
This was an excursion to two beautiful places in Sicily. Our driver told us a little about Sicily on the one hour drive to Taormina. He explained the economic problems with excessive unemployment and threats to jobs for locals from the massive invasion of illegals. At both locations he dropped us off at a convenient location and we were on our own to explore the town. Don't miss the spectacular Roman theater which is worth seeing despite the high admission price.Try to climb to the top for an awesome view. MT. Aetna was obscured by clouds the day we visited. The driver drove safely up and down the narrow winding roads.
It's great to have a bus dedicated to our own group, less time restraint. But if we knew, weëd spend more time in Taormina rather than Castelmola. The view on the way there was great but there's really not much to see in Castelmola. Our tour guide didn't really give us any background info on Messina, Taormina nor Castelmola. She was more interested in where we came from and what we did for a living. It was a family reunion, we knew what each other!
