White Water Kayaking and Montego Bay Overview

This excursion was taken on May 1, 2013. My wife and I are in the 45-55 age category and we both have very high fitness levels. So, if you can't handle some non-flat terrain, getting wet (or are afraid of water) and don't have good upper body strength, this IS NOT the adventure for you. But if you do, you will be rewarded. This was one of the best excursions of the 24 that we have been on. The van ride seemed a bit long (over an hour) but good things come to those who wait. We were fortunate to have our own guide. He discussed all the equipment and how to use it. He emphasized the importance of safety. We started by walking for about 10 minutes on a semi rough path up river to the kayak launch. It took us some trial and error working together but that was part of the fun. Some parts of the river were quick moving and there was definitely that adrenaline rush you get with that type of activity. Our guide was very accommodating and was able to get some pictures of us as we navigated our way downstream. Partway down, we pulled to the side where they have a rope swing. We scampered up to the platform that was about 20 feet over the river. I felt like a 10 year old again without my mother telling me I couldn't jump off. My wife forced her way in front of me to go first. What a great time. Back to the kayaks for the rest of the way. Got to a small beach to unwind for a bit and have a beverage before heading back. It's hot and sunny bring your sunscreen. Also recommend bug spray applied liberally beforehand.
