Exclusive Tour to Pompeii and Amalfi Coast

Departing from the Maritime Station cruise pier in groups of never more than 30 people, you will meet your guide and your driver, who take you on an approximately 45 minute drive along the road that follows the Bay of Naples towards Mount Vesuvius and the ancient City of Pompeii, which lies in its shadow. Ironically, one of the ancient world's worst disasters preserved time in Pompeii, where you will experience life as it was lived in 79 AD. Once a thriving empire, it was devastated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD when 30 feet of volcanic ash and pumice stone covered the city.

Upon arrival in Pompeii, you will enter by one of its ancient gates, and a short walk will take you to the city's hub, the Forum. Surrounded by lavish temples and porticoes, you'll begin to grasp the lifestyle of the inhabitants. Admire the mansions and the art of wealthy patricians who moved to Pompeii to escape the turmoil of Rome; view countless paintings and inscriptions. See the streets with raised pavements on both sides and the stepping-stones that ensured pedestrians a safe crossing at intersections. Your guided visit to Pompeii is approximately two hours.

After your visit to Pompeii, sit back and enjoy an approximately 90 minute to 2 hour scenic driving tour along the Bay of Naples, and then over the mountain to the Amalfi Coast. You'll drive to the picturesque seaside resort of Amalfi, which lies at the mouth of a deep gorge. It is one of the most popular holiday resorts in Italy. As a sea power, Amalfi played an important role in the Middle Ages. It was part of the four Maritime Republics that included Venice, Genoa and Pisa. You will spend a total of about 2 hours in Amalfi, including approximately 90 minutes of free time on your own to purchase lunch, shop, take photos, purchase an optional cruise along the coast, or stroll along the narrow streets to the Piazza del Duomo. From this square, a flight of 60 or more steps leads to the impressive Cathedral of St. Andrew. The interior of the church dates as far back as the 13th century with the highlight of the cathedral being the 11th century bronze doors from Constantinople.

At the appointed time, you will return for the 90 minute to 2 hour drive back to Naples.

Our guide was great and provided us with lots of interesting and fun facts about the historical Pompeii site. She also arranged some time for us to enjoy the pizza! Our driver also had done a great job in driving through the narrow roads to Amalfi. Great experience!

Visiting Pompeii during Italy’ Labor Day weekend is a challenge, completing the Amalfi Drive proved impossible. Met by an enthusiastic, macho real Italian guide who kept our interest throughout the day, we travelled in an excellent A/C bus driven by a most capable driver who negotiated expertly hills, narrow roads, heavy traffic etc. The visit of Pompeii was a highlight of our three week cruise and though we could not drive de Amalfi due to road congestion, we were given glimpses of this magnificent coast line and unexpected bus tour of highlights of Naples. Highly recommended tour.

The dive and boat ride along the Amalfi Coast was breathtaking. The walking tour of Pompeii was difficult but it very interesting to see the place and hear about the life of these ancient people.
