Arles, Les Baux and Saint-Remy de Provence
Begin your history adventure as you travel to scenic Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the grand Rhone River, a town steeped in Provencal culture. Upon arrival, gaze up at the 2-tiered Arenes Roman amphitheater, then make your way to Forum Square with the statue of the Provencal poet Frederic Mistral, Hotel-Dieu (former charity hospital) and Van Gogh's Cafe. Be sure to grab a photo of the Romanesque sculptures over the 12th-century doorway of the Church of St. Trophime.
Your day will continue as you next make your way to the Alpilles mountain range where you will find the charming, medieval village of Les Baux de Provence situated on a panoramic, rocky plateau. While in town you might be able to purchase tickets to a light and sound show at the Les Carrieres de Lumieres old stone quarry.
From here you will make your way to Saint Remy de Provence with its Greek and Roman ruins and Provencal charm. There may be time to visit Saint Paul de Mausole monastery where the Post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh was hospitalized.
