Backcountry Zodiac Expedition

Upon arrival at the Ketchikan tour meeting point, you will be outfitted with top-of-the-line rain gear, hat, gloves, socks, boots and safety glasses. You and the members of your group will be responsible for driving the boat during your tour. The local representatives will give a short safety briefing before heading out. Be sure to keep your camera handy, as this seafaring adventure offers photo opportunities from the moment you set sail.

Throughout this nearly 25-mile coastal expedition, your guide will offer narrative covering the area's history, geology, culture and ecology.

You will board a four-passenger, 14 foot zodiac boat and head off the map to behold the beauty of Alaska, away from the crowds. Following the guide boat, you will motor to the harbor in front of Saxman Native Village and chat about the totem poles and Tlingit culture. You'll search for bears, eagles, whales and seals, and venture into the backcountry wilds of Nichols Passage. Here, you will marvel at the beautifully rugged coastline of southeast Alaska, most specifically the intended site of the "Bridge to Nowhere". This Ketchikan excursion takes place in Alaskan coastal waters, not on calm lakes. Chances are it will be bumpy.

You'll navigate through the coves and inlets around Blank Island, view the tranquil cove of an old gold mine and visit a seal rookery. Before you return to the dock you'll make a brief stop in front of historic Creek Street to hear about its wild history.

Once back in town, you'll dock your boat and warm up with a hot beverage. You will then have the option to spend some time exploring downtown Ketchikan on your own or board the shuttle back to Ward Cove.

Please Note: You and the members of your group will be driving the boat during the duration of the tour.
