Barcelona Highlights with Montserrat

Discover the best of Barcelona and the breathtaking beauty of Montserrat on this full-day experience that combines a panoramic city tour, scenic transportation, and a guided visit to one of Catalonia's most iconic landmarks.

Your journey begins as you board a comfortable, air-conditioned coach to start a panoramic tour of Barcelona's most famous sights. As you travel through the city, enjoy views of the elegant Passeig de Gracia, one of Barcelona's most celebrated boulevards, where you will see two of Antoni Gaudi's modernist masterpieces: La Pedrera and Casa Batllo. The tour continues through the city with a stop at the MNAC viewpoint and the Montjuic Castle area, located within the historic 1992 Olympic zone. Here you will board the Montjuic Cable Car and glide above the city, enjoying spectacular panoramic views over Barcelona, the harbor, and the surrounding landscape.

Following the morning tour, you will return to the starting area, where you will have approximately three hours of free time to explore Barcelona at your own pace. Take this opportunity to enjoy lunch, stroll through nearby neighborhoods, browse local shops, or simply relax before the second part of your adventure begins.

At 1:45 PM, return to the original meeting location to check in for the afternoon portion of the tour. Meet your guide and board the air-conditioned coach for a scenic drive toward Montserrat, located about one hour outside the city. Upon arrival, you will board the famous cogwheel train that climbs the mountain, offering incredible views as you ascend toward the monastery.

Montserrat, whose name comes from the Catalan words Mont (mountain) and Serrat (serrated), is world-famous for its unique jagged rock formations and dramatic natural scenery. In 1987, the area was declared a National Park to preserve its cultural and natural heritage. Upon reaching the monastery, follow your local guide through the site and discover the history and architecture of this important spiritual destination. Today, a community of around 80 monks continues to live at Montserrat following the rule of Saint Benedict.

During your visit, admire the Gothic and Renaissance details of the basilica and sanctuary. You will also learn about the fascinating legend of the miraculous apparition of the Madonna and Child in the nearby cave of Santa Cova. The revered woodcarving, known as La Moreneta or the Black Madonna, is preserved within the monastery church and can be visited during your tour.

After the guided portion, you will have free time to further explore Montserrat at your own pace. You may choose to taste some of the region's finest traditional liquors, shop for locally produced treats, or visit the engaging audio-visual exhibition "Espai Audiovisual Montserrat," which explores three essential aspects of the site: the mountain, the monastery, and the sanctuary. The area also offers several small chapels and scenic walking trails for those wishing to explore further. A short walk to the Cross of Sant Miquel, about 15 minutes from the monastery, rewards visitors with one of the best viewpoints in the region. Art enthusiasts may also wish to visit the Montserrat Museum, which houses an impressive collection of archaeological and artistic works ranging from medieval pieces to avant-garde creations, although entrance to the museum is not included in the tour.
